Having first reached Britain in the 1690s, Chinese wallpapers became
popular in Europe and America for several centuries.
You can easily find Chinese wallpaper elements from Baroque in the
17th century, and Rococo in the 18th century,or Art Deco in the 20th century.
This widespread taste in interior decoration was part of a fashion in the
decorative arts known as ‘Chinoiserie’ – a fanciful Chinese style invented by Europeans.
Rooms with beautiful original Chinese wallpaper that is still intact can
be seen in stately homes in England or old Colonial houses in America
today.
